An examination of factors controlling biogenic silica preservation in modern sediments from east-central Lake Tanganyika, East Africa

چکیده

The biogenic silica (BSi) content of sediments has been used to infer past primary productivity in marine and lacustrine systems (Johnson et al., 2002; Verschuren et al., 2002). Biogenic silica is derived from the fossil remains of diatoms, sponge spicules, and plant phytoliths; however, diatoms make up the overwhelming source of BSi in most aquatic systems. Diatoms are important primary producers in Lake Tanganyika, comprising on average 1215% of phytoplankton chlorophyll A in the upper 20 m in the southern basin and Kigoma area (Climlake, 2005). Although BSi abundance in historical sedimentary records can be a powerful primary productivity indicator when applied carefully, it is essential to have a thorough understanding of the physical and chemical processes involved in the production, transport, and preservation of BSi in sediments before interpreting past sedimentary records.

A Comparative Study of Grain Size Distribution and Mineralogy of Sandy Sediments between Kasekera Stream (Forested) and Mtanga Stream (Deforested) as Related to On Shore and Near Shore Environments: Lake Tanganyika, East Africa

Lake Tanganyika is an ancient, tropical, fresh water lake associated with the Great African Rift. Due to active deforestation in many areas surrounding Lake Tanganyika, there is a measurable increase in sediment discharge entering the lake. Certain protected areas (protected from fire and deforestation) allow for comparison of sediment discharge, including grain size distribution and lithologic...

Effects of local farming and deforestation on tropical freshwater streams: A comparison of stream geomorphology and fine clastic particle size, distribution, and water column suspension in Kalande Stream (forested) and Ngelwa Stream (deforested), Lake Tanganyika, East Africa

Lake Tanganyika is the oldest and largest of the East African rift lakes and therefore has the potential for recovery of temporally long paleoclimate records vital to our understanding of the climate history of the region (Figure 1). The resources of Lake Tanganyika are central to the viability of East Africa. As regional populations continue to expand, at an annual rate of 1.9-3.0%, demand for...

Lake-level history of Lake Tanganyika, East Africa, for the past 2500 years based on ostracode-inferred water-depth reconstruction

Assemblages of ostracodes from sediment cores illuminate lake-level history at decadal to centennial timescales during the late Holocene at Lake Tanganyika, East Africa. The ostracode-based lake-level curves for several cores resemble both each other and the only previously published lake-level record of comparable resolution for Lake Tanganyika during this interval, successfully reconstructing...

Establishing chironomids as paleo-indicators for Lake Tanganyika: a preliminary qualitative assessment of chironomid distribut

This paper presents the results of a preliminary qualitative study on the distribution and diversity of live larval chironomids (Insecta: Order Diptera, non-biting midges) in the Kigoma Bay Region of Lake Tanganyika. In recent years, fossil midges have been used extensively, both as ecological indicators of anthropogenic impacts on lakes, and as proxies in paleoclimate/paleoecological studies (...

Facies Relationships and Sedimentation in Large Rift Lakes and Implications for Hydrocarbon Exploration: Examples from Lakes Turkana and Tanganyika

Cohen, A. S., 1989. Facies relationships and sedimentation in large rift lakes and implications for hydrocarbon exploration: examples from lakes Turkana and Tanganyika. Palaeogeogr., Palaeoclimatol., Palaeoecol., 70: 65-80. Two African lakes, Turkana and Tanganyika, illustrate a spectrum of sediments and facies architectures which can occur in large rift lacustrine basins. They demonstrate cont...
